KENT, OHIO- The Golden Flashes honored the 2022 senior class and welcomed back a host of alums, but it was Ohio who earned a 25-10 victory in the annual Grudge Match.
A strong crowd inside the M.A.C. Center welcomed back the 2020 and 2021 senior classes and the team honored them with their wrestling singlet in a mid-match ceremony. Kent State Varsity "K" Hall of Famer Nic Nemeth hyped up the crowd and the dual did not disappoint.
The Golden Flashes and Bobcats split a pair of spirited bouts to start the dual. Jake Ferri got things off to a quick start for the home side, using a trio of takedowns to earn an 8-3 decision over Ohio's Oscar Sanchez. The Bobcats tied the dual at the buzzer in the 133-pound matchup as Giovanni DiSabato was credited with a takedown as time expired to earn a 4-2 victory and tie the dual at three.
Ohio took its first lead of the Grudge Match with a 1-0 victory by Kyran Hagan at 141 pounds over Louis Newell. Newell had Hagan scrambling at few points throughout the dual but was unable to gain enough control to be credited with a takedown and a lone escape was the only point of the bout. At 149 pounds, a second-period, four-point near fall was the difference as a comeback by Kody Komara was thwarted by Alec Hagan
After an Ohio victory by fall at 157 pounds, reigning MAC Wrestler of the Week Brady Chrisman picked up where he left off. Chrisman was dominant in an 18-6 major decision victory where he had over two minutes of riding time and over a half dozen takedowns. Through six matches, Ohio led 15-7.
The crowd was treated to a high-scoring, entertaining bout at 174 as Sal Perrine outlasted Michael Ferree, 13-8. The duo traded takedowns and escapes but a second period near fall by Perrine proved to be the difference. The home crowd erupted as Colin McCracken delivered a strong performance in a 4-1 decision over Zayne Lehman. Ohio was able to earn victories in the final two bouts of the day to secure the victory.
Kent State is back in action on Sunday, hosting the Central Michigan Chippewas. The conference dual is set for a noon start inside the M.A.C. Center.
