KENT, Ohio - Friday night, the Kent State gymnastics team hosted its second tri-meet of the season, defeating visiting Rutgers and Cornell, 195.550 to 195.175 and 191.400, respectively. This improves the Golden Flashes' record toย 5-0 for the season.
The big story from the night for the Flashes came on floor. Kent State once again put on quite the show when it came to floor routines, as they finished with a stellar score of 49.475 on the event. A Kent State gymnastics team has not done that since 3/16/16, which also happened to be against Cornell.
Just like what happened Sunday at Ball State, an impressive showing on floor is what propelled the Flashes to victory. In this one, the star of the show was freshman Alyssa Guns, who dazzled the audience and judges alike, earning a 9.975 on floor (including a perfect score of 10 from one judge). Two other Flashes, junior Olivia Amodei and junior Karlie Franz, also scored at least 9.900 on the event. No member of either opponent was able to finish that high on floor.
The other events all had similar outcomes for Kent State. The Flashes scored a 48.650 on vault, 48.750 on bars, and 48.675 on beam. Rutgers was able to edge them out on vault and bars, registering scores of 48.975 and 48.825 on each respective event. But with such a spectacular finish on floor, the Flashes were able to overcome any shortcomings they may have experienced on other events.
Now, the Flashes roll into their next meet with a pep in their step, fresh off of a thrilling victory at home filled with tons of energy and excitement. February 6, Kent State will take on George Washington, Eastern Michigan, and LIU on the road in Washington, D.C. That contest is set to begin at 1 p.m.
