KENT, Ohio - The Kent State men's basketball team extended its winning streak in home openers to 17 straight after its 76-55 victory over Baldwin College at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes got off to a slow start after tip-off. Sincere Carry helped the Flashes get on the board with the first field goal of the night 17 minutes into the game. Carry and the Flashes were fighting to find their rhythm. Baldwin Wallace did not make it easy for the Flashes, shooting lights out from three until almost halfway through the first. The Flashes were outshot from the three in the first half 42.1 to 26.7 percent.
Carry kept the team afloat with his 18 points in the first half including a deep three-pointer in the last 30 seconds making it 41-29 going into the second half. Chris Payton and Delrecco Gillespie kept strong posting up defensively in the first half. Freshman Gillespie led with four rebounds and Senior Chris Payton followed with three.
Defensively, the team stayed on their toes while Baldwin Wallace had multiple guards shooting threes from every corner and using the glass to their advantage. The Yellow Jackets led the game with their eight offensive rebounds. The Flashes continued to fight creating a 24 point-lead in the second half. Carry was a big reason the Flashes were able to pull away posting a game-high 31 points and 7 assists. Miryne Thomas and Giovanni Santiago both contributed double-digits to help the Flashes to victory. Thomas posted 11 points and Santiago followed with ten points.
Despite a 20-point lead Coach Senderoff and the team agreed they needed to move forward and improve for a tough three-game home stand. " We will learn from tonight's game and continue to play better with more focus," said Coach Senderoff to the media after tonight's game.
