
Munguia Captures Second Title in Three Weeks

ANNAPOLIS, MD- Enrique Munguia captured his second title of the season at the 44th Navy Classic, headlining seven wrestlers who placed on Saturday.
Munguia went 4-0 on the day on Saturday and started off his run as the Classic's top seed in dominant fashion, an 18-3 tech fall against Brodie Porter of the Citadel. After a 10-1 major decision in round two, he defeated Chase Barlow of Bucknell 8-3, Barlow would wrestle back to claim 8th place. In the semi-finals, the Elyria native took down Bubba Wilson of #19 Nebraska, who would go on to finish fourth. In the title match, Munguia defeated Jordan Slivka of Ohio in a 3-0 shutout. Slivka was ranked 32nd by InterMat and an honorable mention by FloWrestling, and was third in the MAC's 165-pound November rankings.
Kody Komara earned a third-place finish in the 149 pound bracket. Komara went 4-1 on the day with his lone loss coming in extra time in the semi-finals. He started off the tournament white hot with a pair of falls in the first and third periods, respectfully. Komara knocked off Kaiden Wagner of Lock Haven in the quarterfinals and closed out a third-place finish with a 3-2 win over Connor Eck of Lock Haven.
Jake Ferri wrestled to a fourth-place finish at 125 pounds. Ferri was ranked second in the 125 pound bracket and earned a major decision victory over Grant Treaster of host Navy. In the second round, Ferri won a 12-11 shootout over Matt Maloney of Lock Haven.
At 141 pounds, Louis Newell wrestled to a fifth-place finish. After an opening-round bye, Newell was dominant in a 13-2 major decision over Bryce Shelton of Air Force. Newell dropped into the wrestle backs after a defeat to #22 Brock Hardy of #19 Nebraska. Newell went 3-0 in the wrestle backs, earning a 12-1 major decision and a pair of decisions, including a 7-2 win over Tyler Dilley of Lock Haven for fifth.
Jacob Cover took sixth at the 285 pound weight class. After an opening-round loss to the eventual runner-up Cover won three straight matches in the wrestle backs. He shutout Luke Niemeyer of Bucknell 2-0 and backed that win up with a 5-2 win over Nick West of Michigan State and Jon Chesser of the Citadel.
At 133 pounds, Brendon Fenton placed seventh after going 3-2 on Saturday. Fenton took down Dyson Dunham of VMI twice, once in the opening round and again for seventh place. After a second-round loss to eventual runner-up Cody Phippen of Air Force (ranked 23rd by InterMat), Fenton defeated Brayton Killiri of the Citadel to set up the seventh-place bout.
Keegan Knapp earned eighth at 157 pounds for the Flashes on Saturday. The Lewis Center native won two matches in the wrestle backs to place eighth. Knapp was up 4-2 when Navy's Andrew Cerniglia had to withdraw and followed that up with a 10-8 win over Job Chishko of VMI.
