
Flashes Pound Huskies, Avenge Earlier Loss

KENT, Ohio — Kent State held visiting Northern Illinois without a field goal for nearly a 10-minute stretch in the second half Wednesday evening inside of the M.A.C. Center and cruised to a 67-43 victory and improved to 6-0 in February.
The Golden Flashes (16-7, 8-6 MAC) pounded the ball inside and scored 38 points in the paint for the third time in the past four games. Kent State shot 70.0% (21-of-30) on two-point attempts and finished the game 28-of-53 overall for a season-high 52.8%. Junior Katie Shumate led three Flashes in double-figures with 15 points. Junior Nila Blackford added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Senior Hannah Young knocked down her first three looks from behind the three-point arc and finished with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Defensively, Kent State held its guest to its fewest points of the season on 16-of-63 shooting (25.4%). The Huskies committed more than twice as many turnovers (11) as it had assists (5) on the night.
A Wagon Wheel Challenge contest at rival Akron on Saturday is next for the Flashes. Tip from James A. Rhodes Arena is slated for 2 p.m.
