MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Kent State gymnastics team traveled to Central Michigan on Sunday, taking on the Chippewas in a Mid-American Conference duel. However, Central Michigan was able to win the meet on their home floor, beating the Golden Flashes, 196.650-195.075.
Out of the gate, Central Michigan failed to put their best foot forward, only posting a score of 49.075 on vault. But the Flashes had trouble finding their stride too, garnering a 49.075 on bars to start things out. Despite this, sophomore Sarah Haxton registered a 9.875 on bars, tied for the highest bars score of the meet.
In the second rotation, Central Michigan posted a 49.200 on bars, while Kent State got a 49.050 on vault. Junior Karlie Franz tied for second place on vault with a 9.850.
On the third rotation, Kent State put up a score of 49.300 on floor, their highest event score of the meet. But Central Michigan posted a 49.500 on floor, thanks in part to scores of 9.950 and 9.925 from Sierra Demarinis and Hannah Demers, respectively.
With that, Central Michigan was able to secure the victory, after defeating the Flashes on the beam as well, despite Sarah Haxton once again tying for first place with a score of 9.875. While Kent State's final overall score of 195.075 was actually higher than their score of 195.050 from their win against Bowling Green a week ago, it was not good enough to beat Central Michigan's 196.650, their best performance of the entire season.
The Flashes will now prepare for a trip to Columbus on Friday night, when they battle Ohio State and Bowling Green in the All-Ohio Meet. Then on Sunday, they'll return to Kent for their final home meet of the season, against Ohio State once again, along with Eastern Michigan. That is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
