COLUMBUS, Ohio - Friday night, the Kent State gymnastics team competed in a tri-meet with Ohio State and Bowling Green, an All-Ohio Meet. The Golden Flashes performed exceptionally well, posting their highest overall score of the season at 196.375.
Most of the time, it makes sense to first mention how the Flashes did on bars, as that has consistently been the event that they have fared the best on all season. And undoubtedly, Friday night was no exception, as Kent State posted a 49.275 on floor, their highest mark on any event in the meet. Junior Karlie Franz led the way for the Flashes on floor, registering a 9.925, highest on the team on the event.
But on this night, the spotlight needs to be shone on Kent State's superb showing on the balance beam. Posting a score of 49.225, the Flashes registered their highest score of the year on beam by a wide margin Friday. Three Flashes posted scores of at least 9.850 on beam, with senior Riley Danielson and junior Rachel DeCavitch tying for first place on the event amongst Kent State participants and second place amongst all gymnasts with scores of 9.875. This is a personal record for Danielson, who now heads into her Senior Day on Sunday fresh off of the best beam outing of her career.
On bars, Kent State posted a respectable 49.200, with sophomore Sarah Haxton setting a personal record of her own on the event with a score of 9.900. This was first among the Flashes and third overall. Not far behind Haxton were DeCavitch, who got a 9.875 on bars, and Franz, who posted a 9.850.
In terms of all-around performances, DeCavitch posted a score of 39.325, just shy of first in the meet, which was a score of 39.350. This is a season-high for DeCavitch.
Now, Kent State will have a quick turnaround, as they head back home to take on Ohio State and Eastern Michigan on Senior Day on Sunday. That meet is set to take place at 1 p.m. at the M.A.C. Center.
