MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Kent State had four players score in double-figures on Wednesday evening in a 78-67 victory at Central Michigan, extending its win streak to four.
The Golden Flashes (14-7, 6-6 MAC) shot 29-of-56 (51.8%) from the floor and never trailed in their first win in Mount Pleasant since 2007. Junior Nila Blackford and freshman Bridget Dunn led the way with 16 points each. Senior Mariah Modkins scored a season-high 15 points and sophomore Casey Santoro added 11.
Junior Katie Shumate finished a transition layup for the game's opening basket before the Chippewas tied it on the ensuing possession. Kent State's defense locked in and forced 10 straight missed shots while taking a 12-3 lead. A three-pointer by Dunn with 1:40 left in the period put the Flashes ahead by 10, but a CMU basket in the final minute made it 15-7 after 10 minutes of action.
Kent State's lead was trimmed to four twice in the second quarter but responded with a 7-0 run both times. Dunn, who scored 11 points in the period, led all players with 14 points at halftime and the Flashes led 35-26.
CMU made six of its first nine shots in the third to get within 47-43 at the 4:19 mark. Kent State had an answer again, making its next six shots and starting to pull away with a 15-2 run that made it 62-45 with 8:21 to play. The lead never dipped below 11 the rest of the way.
The Flashes will be back in action on Saturday at the M.A.C. Center for the annual Play4Kay game against Ball State. Tip is slated for 1 p.m.
