
Benco’s Javelin PR Leads Flashes Thursday at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – Scott Benco opened the 2022 outdoor season with a personal-best mark of 219'-8" in the men's javelin throw as the Kent State track and field program began action at the Raleigh Relays on Thursday.
After a foul on his first attempt of the day, Benco unleashed a throw that beat his previous PR by two feet and moves him into seventh on the Golden Flashes' all-time performance list. He entered the finals in fifth place and finished sixth. Bradley Heck also had a strong showing, just missing the finals and placing 10th with a throw of 196'-7".
Baidy Ba completed the men's 5,000-meter run in 14:27.60, which is the fourth fastest time in program history. Joe Farley (14:40.86), Shadrack Kipkosgei (14:53.41) and Drew Johnson (14:55.19) also ran sub-15:00 races.
Gabby Bailey and Grace Tennant placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the women's shot put. Bailey posted a mark of 51'-3" on her third attempt, while Tennant threw 50'-7.50" on her first attempt. In the men's shot put, Nolan Landis finished 23rd with a throw of 52'-7.50".
Angelina Lotarski cleared the opening bar at 11'-3.75" on her third attempt and tied for 20th in the women's pole vault.
Kent State will have 28 student-athletes in action during Friday's second day of the Raleigh Relays. Competition begins at 9:30 a.m. with the men's high jump and women's discus throw.
