FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Kent State began its spring break trip by taking both games of a doubleheader from Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (9-13) won the first game, 11-1, in five innings and completed the sweep by winning the nightcap in six innings, 8-0.
The pitching staff limited the Mastodons to just two hits on the day and recorded 18 strikeouts to only three walks.
Kent State batters showed patience at the plate, totaling eight walks and six hits in each game. Junior Julia Mazanec led the way by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Fifth-year Madyson Cole and sophomore Alex Fiske added two hits each. Cole drove in three runs and was one of two Flashes to hit a home run.
Game 1: Kent State 11, Purdue Fort Wayne 1 (5 innings)
Brooklyn Whitt drew a walk to start the game and moved to second on a sac bunt before coming around to score on Chloe Cruz's single to right field. Madyson Cole followed with a homer to left for a 3-0 lead.
The Flashes added four in the second, as the first two batters of the frame reached and then scored on a double by Julia Mazanec. A pair of wild pitches allowed Mazanec to score, and Madison Hershberger was able to score on a double-steal attempt.
A wild pitch on a swinging third strike granted Purdue Fort Wayne an additional out to work with in the bottom of the second, and the host was able to push a run across the plate to get within 7-1.
Emily Lippe drove in a pair of runs with a double in the fourth and Savannah Wing added a RBI on a sac fly to left field.
The fifth inning started with Alexandria Whitmore getting hit by a pitch. Whitmore was able to advance on a groundout and wild pitch before crossing the plate on a sac fly by Mazanec, who finished with a game-high three RBIs.
Andrea Scali (1-6) had nine strikeouts and allowed one run on one hit in the complete game victory.
Game 2: Kent State 11, Akron 1 (5 innings)

A pair of walks and three Purdue Fort Wayne errors during the top of the fourth allowed Kent State to score three more runs. Dylan Robertson blasted a two-run homer, her first hit in a Flashes uniform, in the sixth to make it 8-0.
Kylie Ringler (4-1) had seven strikeouts and held the Mastodons to one hit in five innings of work. Jessica LeBeau struck out two of the three batters she faced in the bottom of the sixth.
