MUNCIE, Ind. – Kent State lost both games of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Ball State on Friday afternoon, 8-5 and 4-1.
The Golden Flashes (9-16, 1-6 MAC) scored four of their five runs with two outs, as sophomore Alex Fiske and freshman Savannah Wing each came through with timely hits that pushed two runs across the plate.
Game 1: Ball State 8, Kent State 5
Kent State plated a run in the top of the first inning on three walks and a hit batter but was unable to deliver a timely hit and left the bases loaded.
A three-run homer highlighted a five-run bottom of the second that gave Ball State the lead for good.
The Golden Flashes scored twice in the third on a two-out single to center by Savannah Wing.
After the Cardinals pushed the lead back to four in the bottom of the fourth, Kent State answered with two runs in the top of the fifth on a pinch hit single by Alex Fiske.
Trailing 8-5 entering the seventh, Emily Lippe attempted to get a rally started with a one-out double, but pinch runner Dylan Robertson was unable to score after advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Madyson Cole led the way at the plate with two hits and was one of four Flashes with a double.
Jessica LeBeau (3-8) went 1.2 innings in the circle, recording two strikeouts and allowing five runs. Anilese Kelly threw the final 4.1 innings and matched her season-high with four strikeouts while allowing three runs.
Game 2: Ball State 4, Kent State 1
Starting pitcher Andrea Scali walked three of the first four Cardinals who stepped to the plate, with a bunt single mixed in, and followed by hitting the next batter to gift the host a 2-0 lead.
Scali (1-7) found her command after that and did not issue another walk over her final six innings in the circle. After allowing a two-run homer in the second inning, the redshirt senior shut down the Ball State lineup and finished with five strikeouts.
Kent State took advantage of an error to start the top of the fifth and Alex Fiske drove in pinch runner Jada Crittendon with the team's only hit in the game.
On Deck for the Flashes
Kent State and Ball State will conclude the series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
