KENT, OHIO- For the second time in as many games the Flashes walked off the Bowling Green Falcons, winning the finale of the four-game series 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Mike McNamara hit a fly ball to right field that was just deep enough to score Kyle Jackson who came screaming in from third and beating the throw home with a head-first slide.
Kent State got a phenomenal performance from Eric Chalus on Sunday. The freshman went six and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out a career high 11. It was the first 10+ strikeout performance for a Kent State pitcher since Luke Albright fanned 10 Bobcats last April 30th.
Bowling Green struck first, capitalizing on an error and Chalus' lone mistake of the game, a two-run homer to Kyle Gurney to make it 2-0 Falcons after one. But Chalus hung zeros the rest of the way and the Flashes got single tallies in the second and fifth to tie the game.
The Flashes took their first lead of the game in the sixth. Collin Mathews was hit by a pitch and that opened the door for a two-out, run-scoring double for Mack Timbrook. Evan Wolf got out of a jam in relief of Chalus in the seventh, pitched a clean eighth and gave way to Aidan Longwell in the ninth after a lead-off single. Longwell gave up a check swing single that landed in short right field, putting runners on the corners. Bowling Green would tie the game on a sac fly two batters later.
Kyle Jackson started off the bottom of the ninth with a hustle double to right center. Justin Kirby followed with a sac bunt that turned into a base hit after he beat the throw to first. Bowling Green then intentionally walked Aidan Longwell and got Nick Elsen to strike out. That set up McNamara who took an 0-1 fastball to right for the game-winner.
Kent State earned a split in the series and sits at 12-14 overall and 7-7 in MAC play. They stay at home for their first mid-week game of the season on Tuesday night. The Flashes play host to the Pitt Panthers, first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
