KENT, Ohio — First-year Kent State volleyball head coach Haley Eckerman has begun to fill her staff with the hiring of assistant coach Will Boyd, she announced on Friday. Boyd served as an assistant coach at St. Edward's University this past fall and will work with the Golden Flashes' setters and middles.
"I am so excited to have Will joining our staff," Eckerman said. "He has been a part of many successful programs at the Division I, Division II and club levels. His résumé along with his energy and love for the game made him a perfect fit for our Golden Flashes Family."
Picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll this past fall, St. Edward's made an impressive run to the championship match in the conference tournament and had three players earn all-league honors.
Boyd spent the two previous years as an assistant coach at West Texas A&M, helping guide the team to a 32-11 overall record, including an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Quarterfinals.
Prior to that, he had stints as a volunteer assistant at three Division I schools, most recently at Texas during the 2018 season in which the Longhorns advanced to the Elite Eight and finished at No. 5 in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll. Boyd focused on setter training and serving as the team's offensive coordinator while also assisting with film analysis and scouting report development.
He had previous stops at UAB and Samford, helping the Bulldogs to a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016, and has also coached at Austin Skyline Juniors Volleyball Club, Southern Performance Volleyball Club and Sports Performance Volleyball Club.
Boyd was a student-athlete on the men's volleyball team at the University of Benedictine in 2015 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Health Promotion with a Concentration in Kinesiology from the University of Montevallo in 2016.
