KENT, Ohio – It was a memorable Senior Day at the Diamond at Dix, as Kent State's seven softball student-athletes playing in their final collegiate game combined for 10 hits, including a walk-off double in the sixth inning by Brooklyn Whitt, in an 8-0 victory over Bowling Green to end the 2022 season on a winning note.
The Golden Flashes (20-28, 11-17 MAC) scored in all six innings to take the rubber match from the Falcons and earn their fifth Mid-American Conference series victory.
Madyson Cole, who recorded three RBIs, and Whitt had two extra-base hits each. Chloe Cruz also had a two-hit day, while Grace Saupe and Andrea Scali each had their first career hit in the second inning.
In her first pitching appearance of the season, Saupe set the tone with a perfect first inning that included back-to-back called third strikes.
Brenna Brownfield roped a two-out single to extend the bottom of the first and then scored on a blast to left field by Cole.
Scali moved from first base to the circle to start the second and sat down all three BG hitters in the frame.
Three straight singles by freshman Savannah Wing, Saupe and Scali extended the lead to 3-0 after two innings.
Scali fanned the first batter in the top of the third before leaving the field at the Diamond at Dix for the final time to a standing ovation.
Sophomore Jessica LeBeau (7-13) replaced her and threw 3.2 scoreless innings while striking out three.
Kent State added a run in each of the next three innings on a triple by Whitt and sac fly by Brownfield in the third, a solo homer by Cruz in the fourth and a two-out double by Cole that allowed the speedy Whitt to race around from first base to make it 6-0 after five innings.
Cruz started the bottom of the sixth with a single before moving to third after a pair of hit batters. Whitt then delivered a double to the gap in right-center, bringing in pinch runners Jada Crittendon and Jade Ramer for the winning runs.
Upgrades at the softball facility, highlighted by a turf outfield, will be made during the offseason, and the Flashes will unveil the Devine Diamond during the 2023 season.
