Cooper Named to Maxwell Award Watch List

KENT, OHIO-Â Kent State running back Marquez Cooper has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List as announced by the Maxwell Football Club.
The Maxwell Award has been given to the "College Football Player of the Year" since 1937. The Award is named for Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, a standout a Swarthmore College and later a sportswriter and football official.
Cooper makes it three-straight seasons for a Golden Flash on the annual Maxwell Award Watch List. Now Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Dustin Crum earned the honor each of the previous two seasons. Cooper joins Lew Nichols (RB- Cental Michigan), Hassan Beydoun (WR-Eastern Michigan), Brett Gabbert (QB-Miami (OH)), Dequan Finn (QB-Toledo), Sean Tyler (RB-Western Michigan) as MAC representatives on the list.
The Gaithersburg, Maryland native one of the main beneficiaries of solid blocking up front for the Flashes last year and took home second-team all-conference honors. He was one of five running backs in the Mid-American Conference to top 1000 yards in 2021, finishing with a team-best 1,205. He was the first Kent State back to top 1,000 yards on the ground since 2012. Cooper also found the endzone 11 times last year. He added 10 grabs and nearly 100 yards receiving, putting him over 1,300 all-purpose yards last season.
The watch list will be narrowed down to a group of semi-finalists before the Maxwell voting panel announces three finalists. The winner will be announced as part of ESPN's College Football Awards show and the official presentation of the award will be at a Maxwell Award ceremony.
