Kent State Drops Saturday Battle to BG

KENT, Ohio β The Kent State volleyball team was unable to earn a weekend split with visiting Bowling Green and fell 3-0 (24-26, 15-25, 21-25) Saturday afternoon inside of the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (9-4, 0-2 MAC) were led offensively by senior Savannah Matthews, who had 10 kills. Freshmen Mackenzie McGuire and Mia Soerensen added nine kills each. Graduate student Alex Haffner had a team-high 17 assists and sophomore Kiersten Kraus totaled 14 assists.
Graduate student Erin Gardner tallied 10 digs to lead the defense and fifth-year Lana Strejcek totaled a team-high four blocks.
How it Happenedβ¦
Β Β Β Set 1: After losing the first six points of the contest, Kent State fought back to lead by as many as four at 22-18. A kill by Savannah Matthews made it 24-21 and gave the Flashes three shots at set point. Lauryn Hovey caught fire and tied it up for BG with three kills in a row. Following a ballhandling error, Hovey put it away with her eighth kill of the set. Kent State's .342 team hitting percentage was offset by seven errors in serving, serve-receive and blocking.
Β Β Β Set 2: The Flashes started slow again, trailing 8-2, and were unable to get back within three points the rest of the way. The Falcons posted a .379 hitting percentage and six aces in the set.
Β Β Β Set 3: A 9-2 run allowed BG to lead by seven early. It was a 23-13 advantage before Kent State battled all the way back to make it 24-21, but the Falcons put it away with a kill on the ensuing point.
Up Next for the Flashes
Kent State begins a four-match road swing next week with contests at Miami on Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1.
