KALAMAZOO, Mich. โย The Kent State soccer team was unable to extend its conference win streak, falling 3-1 to Western Michigan on Thursday night.
The Golden Flashes (2-6-2, 2-1ย MAC) drop their first game in Mid-American Conference play, while the Broncos (2-4-4, 2-0-1 MAC) extend their unbeaten streak to three matches.
After Western scored three unanswered goals to start the game, sophomore Siena Stambolich scored her second goal in as many matchesย just before the halftime whistle. Stambolich intercepted an attempted clearance at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot just inside the left post that found its way past the diving keeper.
Stambolich has scored two goals on the season and four for her career.
Neither team was able to score in the physical second half and the Flashes' comeback effort came up short.
The Flashes trailed the Broncos in shots 7-4, but the two sides were even in shots on goal with four apiece. Kent State committed 15 fouls to the Broncos' 13, and both of the game's yellow cards were shown to the Flashes.
Freshman Lua Suero made her collegiate debut on Thursday, playing 22 minutes off the bench.
Kent State will be back on the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 2, when they host Toledo at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.ย
