Schaffer and Ferri Shine in Setback at Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY- Blake Schaffer earned his first collegiate pin and Jake Ferri won by major decision, highlighting a 22-13 setback at Buffalo in Sunday's conference dual.
Ferri earned his 12th win of the season to start the dual, knocking off Mason Bush 13-4 to earn the bonus point with a major decision victory. Ferri had five takedowns total in the match and amassed over two minutes of riding time in the decisive victory.
Jacob Houpt made his varsity debut on Sunday, taking on Buffalo's Tommy Maddox. Maddox took an early lead thanks to a late takedown in the first but Houpt was not to be denied. The freshman earned a pair of escapes to keep pace with Maddox through two periods. Houpt would get an escape and takedown in the third but Maddox hung on for a 7-5 victory.
Pablo Castro IV also made his varsity debut battling Jack Marlow of Buffalo. Castro earned a pair of first-period takedowns and added an escape to lead 5-3 after the opening three minutes. Marlow battled back with a takedown and escape to gain a 6-5 edge, but Castro would escape to tie the bout at six. However, Castro couldn't get one more takedown to flip the bout in his favor, Marlow got the riding time bonus point to win 7-6.
At 149 pounds, Kody Komara and Matt Ryan went down to the wire. Komara led 2-1 after one with a takedown followed by a Ryan escape. The wrestlers traded escapes at the start of the second and the third periods before Ryan had a late takedown to go up 4-3. Komara got the escape and used that momentum for a late takedown in regulation to earn the 6-4 victory.
Buffalo would win matches at 157 and 165 to take a 13-7 lead. Keegan Knapp nearly completed a comeback against Michael Pettite but was on the wrong end of a 8-5 decision. Dillon Carlson made a step up in weight to 165 to make his varsity debut against Noah Grover. Carlson battled with a trio of escapes but dropped a major decision to Grover.
The match at 174 between Michael Ferree and Jay Nivison mirrored the on at 149 pounds. Ferree started with an early takedown and led 2-0 after the first. After trading escapes, Nivison tied the match at three with a takedown. A second takedown by Nivison was matched by a pair of Ferree escapes to send the match to overtime tied at five. Neither wrestler could gain an advantage through most of the extra period until Nivison landed a shot for a late takedown to win 7-5.
Tyler Bates and Giuseppe Hoose got into a shootout at 184 pounds. Bates hit an early takedown but was met with an escape out of the takedown and at the start of the second. Hoose registered a pair of takedowns in the second, only to see Bates escape each time. The pace picked in the third with Hoose and Bates trading scores. Bates couldn't make up the difference and ultimately fell 14-8.
Schaffer dominated his match with Sam Mitchell, who came into the dual as the MAC's second-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds. The freshman recorded a trio of takedowns through two-plus periods. Schaffer then caught an over-aggressive Mitchell and turned it into his first collegiate win by pinfall, securing the pin with a little over a minute remaining.
At heavyweight, Eli Sheeran got up early on Jacob Cover and wrestled defensively after that. Cover recorded a pair of escapes but couldn't close the gap in what ended as a 6-2 decision for Sheeran and a 22-13 final.
The Flashes are now 0-2 in MAC duals but return home for a pair of MAC duals next week. First up is Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Friday night. The dual between the Golden Flashes and Cougars will get started at 6 p.m. and will be inside the Kent State Fieldhouse.
