KENT- The Golden Flashes got a dominant performance from Jake Ferri, but SIU-E took down Friday night's dual 25-12 inside the Kent State Field House.
Friday's match started at 157 pounds where Keegan Knapp earned a major decision with a 11-3 win over Caine Tyus. The freshman had a trio of takedowns in the first period to take a 6-2 lead after the opening three minutes. Knapp dominated the second period, controlling riding time for the entire two minutes. In the third, Knapp recorded a reversal and his fourth takedown of the match, add in the riding time bonus and Knapp earned the bonus point for the major decision.
At 165, Bradley Gillum caught Munguia in the second period and earned the fall to give SIU-E a 6-4 lead. At 174, Diehl recorded a pair of takedowns that were met by Breen escape. However Breen couldn't get the takedown that he needed in the final stages, Diehl earned riding time bonus.
After a scoreless first period at 184, Tyler Bates recorded a four-point near fall in his match with Sergio Villalobos to take control of the match. He added a takedown in the third to earn a dominant win and an 8-1 decision. The Cougars would take the matches at 197 and heavyweight.
Ferri took control of his match with Austin Macias late in the first period. The grad student recorded a pair of takedowns with under a minute remaining in the first to lead 4-1 after the opening three minutes. Ferri then began to pour it on in the second, recording three takedowns and getting a four-point near fall to take a commanding 14-4 lead. He didn't let up in the third, recording an escape and more back points to trigger the technical fall. Ferri won in dominant fashion with a 24-4 technical fall victory.
The Cougars would win tough, close, low-scoring matches the rest of the way, including an instant classic at 149. Kody Komara and Caleb Tyus went to extra time when they met last year and this time around was no exception. Each wrestler recorded an escape during regulation, but seven minutes wasn't enough and it went to extra time tied at one. Both teams tried to claim victory with video challenges on takedowns. Komara's was ruled to have happened out of bounds and Tyus' came after the buzzer, sending the match beyond extra time and into the tie breaker round. In the first tie breaker, Tyus scored a reversal from the down position. Komara chose neutral in the second tie-breaker, but couldn't find the equalizer, giving Tyus the 3-1 win.
Kent State will be back in action at 1p.m. on Sunday afternoon, welcoming in Clarion for a conference dual. It will be a "Beauty and the Beast" extravaganza with wrestling at one end of the M.A.C. Center and gymnastics against Western Michigan on the other. Tickets to the event are available through KSUTix.com.
