KENT, Ohio – The Kent State soccer team fell to Miami in a hard-fought 1-0 contest on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (6-3-2, 3-1-0 MAC) drop their first Mid-American Conference match of the season while the RedHawks (4-7-1, 1-3-0 MAC) earn their first win of the conference schedule.Â
The Flashes' defense held the Miami offense in check in the first half, limiting the RedHawks to just two shots on goal. Offensively, the Flashes generated multiple strong scoring chances but could not find the go-ahead goal as Dominique Popa tallied five saves in the opening period.Â
After a scoreless first half, Miami scored in the 61st minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Flashes continued to find good looks at goal in the final half-hour but could not score the equalizer. Alisa Arthur and Callie Cunningham both had great shots narrowly miss in the final minutes, with Cunningham's hitting the right post and Arthur's just skimming the top of the crossbar.
Arthur led the Flashes with five shots on the afternoon while Josie Morgan put a pair of shots on goal. In net, Sarah Melén tallied four saves.
The Flashes trailed the RedHawks slightly in shots (15-16) but the two sides were even in shots on goal (6-6). Miami was able to draw 11 corner kick opportunities compared to Kent State's 5.Â
