Flashes Clinch Postseason Spot with 4-1 Win Over Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Mary Kate Lape tallied three assists as the Kent State soccer team earned a crucial 4-1 victory on the road against Toledo on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (9-6-2, 6-4-0 MAC) clinch a spot in the Mid-American Conference Tournament while the Rockets (7-8-2, 4-5-1 MAC) are on the outside of the postseason picture looking in heading into Thursday's regular season finale.
The Flashes jumped out to a 1-0 in the 13th minute as Lape found Siena Stambolich inside the 18-yard box and the junior hammered home her third goal of the season.
Kent State would hold the one-goal advantage heading into the halftime break. The Flashes' defense held the Rockets' offensive attack to zero shots on goal through the first 45 minutes.
The Flashes' offense came to life in the second half and turned a tightly-contested game into a blowout. Lape found Alisa Arthur in the 49th minute on a beautiful cross and the junior netted her team-best seventh goal of the season. Ten minutes later, Lape connected with Alanna Raimondo, who extended the Flashes' lead to three with her third of the season.
Lape's three assists are tied for the second-most in a game in program history. Current assistant coach Jenna Hellstrom holds the Kent State single-game assist record after tallying four against Bowling Green in 2013.
Toledo was able to add one goal of its own in the 60th minute, but the Flashes made it a three-goal game once again when Tori Copfer found Kelsey Salopek, who netted her second of the season off a spectacular left-foot shot in the 71st minute.
In the box score, the Flashes trailed in total shots (18-11) but held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Alisa Arthur led the attack with four shots, two of which were on goal. Sarah Melén tallied three saves, bringing her season total up to 76.
Savannah Holmes made her collegiate debut in the win.

Kent State will wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 26, in Buffalo. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
