BUFFALO, N.Y. – A year ago, Buffalo came into Dix Stadium and knocked the Kent State women's soccer team out of the postseason with a 2-0 win. On Thursday, the Golden Flashes returned the favor, earning a 2-1 win at UB Stadium.
The Flashes (10-6-2, 7-4-0 MAC) earn their second-consecutive road win while the Bulls (7-5-6, 4-4-3 MAC) were eliminated from the MAC Tournament with the loss and wins by Ohio and Miami.
Buffalo, needing a win or draw to secure their postseason spot, forced the Flashes onto their back foot early. In the first 15 minutes, the Bulls held a 6-1 advantage in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks, but Sarah Melén tallied for saves early to keep the early deadlock.
Josie Morgan gave Kent State a one goal advantage in the 38th minute. Lua Suero found Emma Barnett cutting up the far sideline, who sent a threatening cross into the box. The ball rebounded off the crossbar and fell to the feet of Morgan, who slotted it past the UB keeper.
Morgan has now scored in back-to-back games and sits at second on the team in goals (5).
The Flashes took the lead into halftime, but the Bulls came out with renewed life with just 45 minutes left to save their season. Katie Krohn, who leads the MAC in goals and is ranked in the top-20 nationally, netted her 13th of the season in the 54th minute.
The tie did not last long. In the 71st minute, Alisa Arthur scored her fifth game-winner of the season, taking on seemingly the entire Buffalo defense before getting past the keeper and capitalizing on the empty net.
Arthur leads the Flashes with eight goals on the season.
Buffalo tried to mount a comeback, but the Flashes' defense came out on top, holding the Bulls to just one shot in the final 20 minutes.
In the box score, the Flashes trailed in total shots (17-5), shots on goal (7-3), and corner kick opportunities (7-1). Arthur led the offensive attack with three shots while Abby Breitschuh and Ava Todd anchored the defense, playing the full 90 minutes.
Melén ended the game with 6 saves.
