KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team got back on track in a big way on Sunday afternoon at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium, beating Central Michigan 3-1.
The Golden Flashes (7-4-2, 4-2-0 MAC) stop a two-game skid against conference foes while the Chippewas (2-5-4, 1-4-1 MAC) have now dropped four of their last five games.
Neither side could gain much ground through the first thirty minutes. Defense on both sides won out as both the Flashes and Chippewas made good looks inside the box hard to come by.
Alisa Arthur opened the scoring for the Flashes in the 38th minute. The junior took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, curling it just inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season.
Arthur leads the Flashes in goals and points (13) on the season and has scored at least a point in five of six MAC games, netting goals in four of those.
The Flashes held a 1-0 lead at the break and extended it in the second half thanks to stellar offensive efforts from a trio of freshmen. Emma Barnett scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 59th minute to double the lead. Alanna Raimondo found Barnett in the right side of the box, who fired a shot that bounced off the right hand of the Central Michigan keeper, off the left post, and across the goal line. Raimondo's assist is also the first of her Kent State career.
Josie Morgan put the game out of reach in the 78th minute, beating the keeper to the right on a penalty kick. Morgan has scored the second-most goals (4) and points (9) so far in her first year in Kent.
The Chippewas were able to score one goal late but the Flashes defense held on to secure crucial points in the standings.
Kent State trailed slightly in shots (12-13) and corner kicks (1-2) but held the advantage in shots on goal (8-7). Sarah Melén tallied five saves in goal for Kent State on the afternoon.
