KENT, Ohio – The Kent State volleyball team was defeated by Ohio, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 10-25), in the final match of the 2023 season on Wednesday at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (6-23, 2-16 MAC) were led offensively by Mackenzie McGuire, who posted 12 kills. McGuire finished her sophomore campaign with an average of 3.86 kills per set, the most by a Kent State attacker since 2017.
Freshman Logan Henderson added 10 kills and matched her career-high with four total blocks.
Senior Bryn Roberts tallied 20 digs to lead the defense. Roberts finishes her career 10th on the Flashes' all-time digs list with 1,162.
Sophomore Kendall White recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs.
How it Happened…
Set 1 (21-25): After five ties and three lead changes in the first half of the set, Ohio took control by scoring five straight to take a 17-13 lead. Kent State fell behind by six points but got within 23-20 on an ace by Kiana Mack. That was as close as it got, and the Bobcats struck first.
Set 2 (25-20): Mack posted a kill on the first point of the set to give the Golden Flashes a lead it never relinquished. Tied 11-11, Logan Henderson gave Kent State the lead for good with a kill. Mack followed with two kills and the pair teamed for a block on the point after that. An ace by Bryn Roberts then capped a 5-0 run. Kent State's lead reached six at 22-16 before it was cut in half by a 4-1 Ohio run. An attack error and ace by Roberts followed to tie it up.
Set 3 (20-25): Neither team led by more than one until a 7-1 run put the Bobcats ahead 17-11. Facing their largest deficit of the set, 23-17, the Flashes continued to fight and won four of the next five points, forcing timeout to be called. A service error ended the comeback though.
Set 4 (10-25): Ohio opened with a 9-0 lead and totaled five aces in the set to prevent Kent State from rallying.
