KENT-Members of the Kent State Athletics department will travel to Rwanda for a two-week adventure beginning on January 1.
A total of 20 student-athletes, administrators and staff will participate in the Student-Athletes on Break program which offers this exciting learning opportunity in a team-based, community-centered service and volunteer trip. The experiences learned will empower them to be dynamic change agents, culture ambassadors and innovative leaders. Upon return, KSU student-athletes will be able to analyze and develop solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges, issues and needs.
"I am thrilled to embark on this extraordinary journey with 16 exceptional athletes representing five different teams," said Katie Schilling, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development and Alumni Engagement. "This upcoming adventure promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, weaving together elements of transformation, education, and community service. Together, we will not only create lasting memories but also embark on a life-changing voyage that transcends the boundaries of sport, fostering personal growth and contributing meaningfully to our community."
In partnership with ARISE Rwanda and the Kent State University Rwanda Center, the team will examine, experience and learn about various aspects of Rwanda culture. The trip will allow the group to experience the culture of the country through historical site visits, cuisine, and general life of the city. They split time between two locations, Kigali and Boneza, where the team will run a sport camp along with other community service activities.
As part of the cultural learning experiences, the group will discuss topics such as conflict management, social, economic, and environmental dynamics, politics and government. In addition, participants learn about human services in the region, including housing reforms and social justice movements, children's rights, education and poverty.
This is the first international service trip for Kent State Athletics since a Costa Rica trip in 2019. Travel funding came primarily via donor support. Follow Kent State Athletics on social media for regular updates during the excursion.
