KENT, Ohio – The Kent State gymnastics team will hit the road for its final meet in the month of February. The Golden Flashes head to Ypsilanti for a Mid-American Conference matchup with Eastern Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
At Kent State's annual Pink Meet on Sunday in the M.A.C. Center, senior Rachel DeCavitch won the all-around competition with a new career-high and sophomore Alyssa Guns won a pair of events.
The Flashes posted a 195.725 team score, but fell just short of Ball State's 196.125 mark.
Competing in Olympic order, the Flashes opened the afternoon on vault. DeCavitch and junior Kyndall Gilbert led the team with 9.850, tying for third in the event. Their marks also set season-high scores for both gymnasts. Senior Karlie Franz added a 9.800 as the Flashes combined for a 49.050 team score, their highest so far this season.
DeCavitch won on bars with a 9.875. The senior leads the Flashes with a 9.821 average score in the event this season. Gilbert scored a 9.775 and Franz tallied a 9.750 as Kent State combined for a 48.325.
The Flashes scored a 49.025 on beam, eclipsing the 49.000 mark for the first time this season. Alyssa Guns earned the first 9.900 on beam by any Kent State gymnast this year to take the event crown. DeCavitch scored a 9.850, good enough for second place in the event, while graduate student Cami Klein placed third with a 9.825.
On floor, the Flashes once again showed why they are ranked so highly, combining for a 49.325 total in the final rotation. Guns won the event and set a new season-high with a 9.925 while Franz scored a 9.900 to place second, her fifth-consecutive meet with a 9.9+ on floor. DeCavitch and junior Kennedy Weinpert each scored 9.850 and senior Olivia Amodei and sophomore Grace Wehry each tallied 9.800 to round out the lineup.Â
DeCavitch tallied a 39.425 all-around score, which topped her previous best that she set during her freshman season in 2020.
Guns was named the MAC Specialist of the Week on Tuesday thanks to her strong performance against the Cardinals. She was the only gymnast in Sunday's meet to record multiple 9.90+ scores. It marks the first time in her career that the Michigan native has earned weekly honors from the Mid-American Conference. Last year, Guns earned Second Team All-MAC honors and competed on floor at the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional at Auburn.
SERIES STATS
Sunday marks the 86th-ever meeting between the Flashes and Eagles. The Flashes hold a 56-29 advantage in the all-time series after winning both meetings against Eastern Michigan a season.
