
Shields Leads Kent State to Runner-Up Finish at MAC Men’s Indoor T&F Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Junior Alexander Shields captured a pair of event titles on Saturday and scored 28 points as Kent State placed second at the Mid-American Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Eastern Michigan was crowned champion with 171 points, while the Golden Flashes totaled 160. Rival Akron finished third with 128 points, giving Kent State a point in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge standings.
Shields started the day by closing his second consecutive heptathlon title. He cleared a personal-best height of 13'-9.25" and finished with a score of 5,297. Shields later won a photo finish in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 7.881 seconds.
Ayden Bath earned Freshman of the Year honors for his performance over the two-day competition. Bath finished right behind Shields in the heptathlon with a personal-best score of 4,990. He added another PR in the 60m hurdles, taking fourth in 7.99 seconds and added a sixth-place finish in the high jump by clearing 6'-2.75".
Alexandre Malanda captured the triple jump in dramatic fashion with a mark of 50'-8.75" on his final attempt of the competition.
Kent State captured gold in the final event of the meet, as Korie Davis II, Asa Hodrick, Jonathan Solomon and Quintin Cooks won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:17.71.
Cooks added a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.97. Ethan Yost took third in 1:52.55.
Jaheim Jones earned All-MAC honors with second-place finishes in the 60-meter dash (6.78) and 200-meter dash (21.87). Hodrick finished third in both races with a time of 6.79 in the 60m and 21.89 in the 200m.
