KENT, Ohio — Senior Katie Shumate totaled 20 points and season-high 12 rebounds as Kent State earned a 68-63 win over visiting Central Michigan on Wednesday night at the M.A.C. Center.
Shumate, who scored 22 points at Ball State on Saturday, has posted consecutive 20-point performances for the second time in her career. It was an efficient night for the guard from Newark, as she shot 6-of-8 from the field and 7-of-8 at the foul line. Freshman Corynne Hauser added 14 points. The duo took over down the stretch and combined for 17 of the team's 19 points during the fourth quarter.
The Golden Flashes (15-7, 7-4 MAC) allowed a basket off the opening tip and trailed most of the first period, but senior Clare Kelly caught fire and scored eight points over the final 2:31 to go ahead 16-14 after 10 minutes.
Kent State outscored the Chippewas by one point during the second quarter and led 30-27 at halftime.
Graduate student Hannah Young scored the first basket of the third quarter, but Central Michigan followed with a 13-0 run to lead by eight points midway through the period. The Flashes answered with a 17-4 run over the final 5:20 and led 49-44 going into the fourth. Kent State shot 7-of-10 as a team and had five players contribute three or more points to the run.
The Chippewas pulled even at 54-54 with 5:19 remaining, but the Flashes had an answer. Hauser sank a mid-range shot to retake the lead and added a free throw fouling an intentional foul. Shumate, who scored Kent State's final 11 points, made a jump shot from inside the paint for a quick 5-0 run, and the lead never went under three the rest of the way.
The Flashes will host Bowling Green for the annual Play4Kay Game on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
