CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Kent State athletic department was one of the universities selected to attend the APPLE Training Institute in Charlottesville, Va. from March 17-19.
The APPLE Training Institutes are the leading national substance misuse prevention and health promotion conferences for student-athletes and athletics department administrators. Developed and coordinated by the University of Virginia and funded by the NCAA, the APPLE Training Institute offers teams of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and administrators an opportunity to evaluate the environment within their athletics departments and develop specific actions plan to enhance prevention efforts.
Cunningham, Dalaney Ranallo (soccer), A.J. Campbell (football) and Khalib Johns (football) represented Kent State student-athletes in Virginia, creating an action plan to help prevent student-athlete substance misuse and promote health and wellness on campus. Rohan Paul, Athletics Business Operations Analyst, and Clara Rodriguez Seto, Athletics Business Office Graduate Assistant, also participated in the conference.
"I had an amazing experience at APPLE Training," Callie Cunningham, a junior on the Kent State soccer team, said. "The information I received was top-tier and very informative and the guest speakers were incredible. I now have a much better understanding of my school and our policies and cannot wait to start our action plan to better our future for student-athletes."
Kent State student-athletes had the chance to share ideas and resources with student-athletes from other schools at APPLE and to learn about ideas that other schools have put into practice. The APPLE Conference also allowed student-athletes to assess athletics departments' strengths and weaknesses in substance abuse prevention and develop an action plan they will implement in the future.
"The experience to travel with students-athletes to the APPLE Training Institute and to understand and learn the challenges that they may face when talking about substance abuse is so valuable," Paul said. "To see them lead discussions and create tools for all student-athletes was the best part of the trip. I look forward to seeing them succeed."
