Oakley Wins 200th Game at Kent State as Softball Completes Sweep of BG

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Head coach Eric Oakley earned his 200th win at Kent State on Sunday as the softball team completed a Mid-American Conference series sweep with a 9-0 win over host Bowling Green. Oakley, who is in his eighth season leading the program, is just the third head coach to reach the 200-win milestone.

The Golden Flashes (17-29, 12-12 MAC) are playing their best ball of the season with three consecutive series victories and wins in seven of the last nine games.

Freshman Macy Irelan (11-11) and redshirt senior Anilese Kelly combined for four strikeouts and held the Falcons to three hits in the series finale. Irelan tossed the first four innings to earn the victory and Kelly recorded her second save of the season by throwing three scoreless relief innings.

Redshirt senior Alexandria Whitmore reached on a walk to start the game before moving into scoring position on a groundout and then stealing third base. Sophomore Delaney Robeson also drew a walk and Whitmore scored on a double-steal attempt. Junior Emily Lippe followed with her 13th home run of the season to make it 3-0.

Sophomore Savannah Wing hit a double to lead off the top of the third and was able to score with the help of two BG errors. Wing added another double in the fifth and scored on a single by senior Julia Mazanec for a 5-0 lead.

An error, single and hit batter loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, and Mazanec quickly unloaded them with a triple. Graduate student Jada Crittendon then recorded a RBI with a groundout that plated Mazanec.

Kent State will celebrate its senior class next weekend as the season finishes with three games at Devine Diamond against Miami on May 5-6.
