Flashes Top Zips for Fourth Time at Canal Park

AKRON, Ohio – For the fourth time this season, Kent State baseball beat the Akron Zips, this time on a picture-perfect night at Canal Park in Akron. Josh Johnson tallied three hits and swiped three bases and Kyle Jackson brought home three on his fifth home run of the season as the Golden Flashes topped the Zips, 7-2.

Ciaran Caughey went the first three innings on Tuesday, holding the Zips to just one run and one hit in the second start of his collegiate career. He was one of five pitchers who limited Akron to just six hits and two runs on the night. Eric Chalus earned his fourth win of the campaign after tossing two innings in relief, allowing zero earned runs.

Jackson reached on an error in the second inning and came home on a sacrifice fly by Brody Williams to open the scoring for the Flashes. An inning later, Jackson clobbered his fifth home run of the year over the high wall in right field to plate Justin Miknis and Aidan Longwell and extend the lead.

After the Zips scored one in both the third and fourth innings, Josh Johnson tallied his first of two doubles on the night into the left-center gap in the top of the sixth. The senior stole third and scored on an errant throw.

Johnson led off the eighth inning with his second double, stealing third again one pitch later. Jake Casey drove him home with a triple for his second extra-base hit of the night. Connor Ashby tallied the third straight hit for the Flashes, firing a single to the right of the second baseman to drive home Casey to add some insurance runs.

Mitchell Scott entered in the ninth and struck out a pair to seal the win for the Flashes, albeit in a non-save situation, unfamiliar ground for the man tied for the nation lead in saves.

The win moves the Kent State to 35-13 on the year, although the win does not count towards the Flashes' Mid-American Conference record. The Flashes travel to Eastern Michigan on Friday for a three-game series with the Eagles before moving on to Muncie to end the regular season at Ball State.
