
Flashes Fall in Opener at Bulldog Brawl

INDIANAPOLIS โ The Kent State volleyball team lost to host Butler, 3-0 (15-25, 23-25, 17-25), as the 2023 season started on Friday.
The Golden Flashes (0-1) had nine players makeย their debut in Blue and Gold but were led by a pair of returners. Sophomore Mackenzie McGuire posted a team-high nine kills and recorded Kent State's lone ace of the contest. Senior Bryn Roberts tallied a match-high 12 digs.
Sophomore Kendall White nearly recorded a double-double in her first match as a Flash and finished with 21 assists and nine digs. Logan Henderson provided a spark off the bench with eight kills over the final two sets to lead a trio of freshmen that saw the court.
How it Happenedโฆ
ย ย ย Set 1 (15-25): Kent State fought back from an early four-point deficit to get within two but followed with three attack errors, a service reception error and bad set to aid Butler in taking a 15-7 lead. The Flashes finished the set with just three kills.
ย ย ย Set 2 (23-25): Neither team was able to win more than three points in a row early on and it was tied 9-9. Kent State then fell behind by as many as four before storming back to take a 22-21 lead on a kill by Mackenzie McGuire. The Bulldogs answered by winning the next three points and went on to close it out with their 17th kill of the set.
ย ย ย Set 3 (17-25): The Flashes had their best offensive set of the match with 12 kills and a .152 hitting percentage but struggled to slow down Butler's attack that hit for a .343 clip. ย
Up Next for the Flashes
Kent State finishes the opening weekend at the Bulldog Brawl with two matches on Saturday. First serve against UC San Diego is scheduled for 10 a.m. with a matchup against Fresno State to follow at 1 p.m.
