TEMPE, Ariz. – The Kent State soccer team was unable to get past Arizona on Thursday afternoon, falling 5-0.
After kickoff was delayed by nearly two hours thanks to lighting early in the day and excessive heat in the afternoon, neither team could find much footing early on. Arizona opened the scoring in the 31st minute.
The Golden Flashes (2-2-1) trailed 1-0 at the halftime break, but Arizona was able to score four more goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Kent State was only able to generate two shots in its first game in the Copper State. Dalaney Ranallo and Tori Copfer pushed up from their spots in the Flashes' back line to try and find an offensive spark, but both attempts were turned away.
Sarah Melén tallied four saves in the first half, bringing her career total up to 200. Last week's Mid-American Conference Player of the Week is just the sixth goalkeeper in Kent State program history to record 200 or more saves.
Freshman Cece Leffler also made her collegiate debut on Thursday, coming into the game as a reserve.

The Flashes will battle the heat once again on Sunday when they take on Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Eastern.
