Heavyweights Shine in CMU Setback

KENT- AJ Burkhart recorded a fall and the Flashes took home three of the final four matches of the night but Central Michigan prevailed 25-15 over the hosts on Friday night inside the MAC Center.
Burkhart was knocking on the door of a pin from the second period on, recording a take down and a near fall in the second frame of his bout with Chandler Amaker. In the final period, Burkhart didn't let up, recording a second take down that carried over into the fall with only 19 seconds remaining on the clock.
Two matches later, Blake Schaffer earned a hard-earned victory over Cameron Wood. Wood had shot up seven spots to number three in the latest MAC wrestling rankings with Schaffer sitting two spots lower. The sophomore recorded an early take down and added two more in the second period to build a 9-3 lead heading into the final period. Schaffer earned the escape to build the lead out to seven only to see Wood battle back. The junior landed a late take down, but Schaffer knowing the time and score, let the clock drain to earn the win.
Earlier in the evening, Pablo Castro earned a convincing 8-1 win over Vincent Perez, using a take down and a near fall in the first to take command of the match. He added a two-point near fall in the second, surrendering only an escape point in the decisive win.
The match of the night for the Flashes belongs to Josh Boggan, who knocked off the MAC's #5 heavyweight Bryan Caves. Boggan was the quicker, fresher wrestler all match and it showed throughout the match. The sophomore scored a take down in each period and added a two-point near fall at the end of the match to score an 11-4 victory.
Full results of the match are below, the Flashes wrap up the regular season next Thursday night against Cleveland State. The bout between the two northeast Ohio rivals is set for 7 p.m.
