3/2/2024 8:51:00 PM | Baseball
JACKSONVILLE, AL- The Golden Flashes swept Saturday's doubleheader with Jacksonville State, winning game one 8-4 and taking the nightcap 10-4.
GAME ONE: KENT STATE 8 JACKSONVILLE STATE 4
Josh Johnson drove in five and Kyle Jackson scored four time as Kent State doubled up Jacksonville State 8-4 in game one of Saturday's twin bill.
The Flashes started early with Kyle Jackson opening the game with a triple and scoring two batters later on a Mike McNamara sac fly. The lead doubled in the third as the Flashes took advantage of a pair of walks and Josh Johnson got his big day started with a rbi single. The third inning started a picket fence for the Flashes as they put up single runs in the third, fourth and fifth. Tim Orr homered for the fourth time this season in the fourth and Johnson again drove in Jackson in the fifth.
But the Gamecocks kept pace, cracking three solo homers and tying the game at four in the sixth. Kent State surged ahead for good in the seventh with Johnson clearing the bases with a three-run double. He then stole third and scored on a McNamara single.
That was more than enough for the duo of Jack Kartsonas and Benny Roebuck. Kartsonas went the first five innings, allowing three runs and striking out five while walking nobody. Roebuck got the win, tossing four innings of one-run ball, striking out four and walking nobody. The righty only allowed one base runner after the Flashes took the lead in the seventh. Gavin Jones slammed the door shut by striking out the side in the ninth.
GAME TWO: KENT STATE 10 JACKSONVILLE STATE 4
The Gamecocks struck first in game two, scoring in the bottom of the first. Kent State took a lead it wouldn't give back in the second. The Flashes took advantage of a pair of errors in the second, with the pivotal error coming on an overthrow of third on a double steal. Jake Casey scored easily and Dom Kibler, the trail runner, scored all the way from first.
Kent State put up crooked numbers in the third and the fifth to put the game out of reach. In the third, the Flashes strung together four hits to start the inning with McNamara and Tim Orr each driving in runs, Kent State would lead 5-1 after three. Kent State blew it open with a four-run fifth. The big blow of the inning came off newcomer Aiden Hinds, who send a three-run homer over the left center wall.
The run support aided Eric Chalus who earned his second win of the season. The lefty went five innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Joe Micelli made his first appearance of the season and the Gardner-Webb transfer tossed three no-hit innings, walking three and fanning four.
Kent State will go for the sweep of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. ET. The Flashes have not named a starter for Sunday's finale.
