OXFORD, Miss. – The Kent State softball team lost both of its games at the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday, falling 5-4 in eight innings to UAB and 10-0 in five innings to the host Rebels.
The Golden Flashes (7-6) had three player record multiple hits over the two games. Graduate student Alexandria Whitmore and senior Emily Lippe led the way with three hits, while freshman Ellie Facher had two.
Game 1: UAB 5, Kent State 4 (8 innings)
Kent State got the scoring started in the top of the second inning. Emily Lippe sent a single up the middle. Pinch runner Sydney Shammo moved to third on two straight sac bunts and scored on a groundout by Delaney Robeson. Ellie Facher brought a second run across the plate with a two-out double.
The Golden Flashes extended it to a 4-0 lead in the fifth. Alexandria Whitmore started the frame with a single. After a successful sac bunt by Carley Penner moved Whitmore into scoring position, Bri Despines hit a double to bring her home. Lippe and Savannah Wing followed with singles to score Despines and make it 4-0.
Starting pitcher Macy Irelan allowed only two hits over the first five innings before UAB rallied to tie it in the bottom of the sixth.
Following a scoreless seventh, Kent State headed to extra innings for the first time this season. Wing was placed at second base to start the eighth and moved to third on a sac bunt by Megan Claerhout, but Kent State was unable to bring her home. UAB then secured the walk-off victory with a single to right field on the fourth pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
Irelan (2-2) recorded two strikeouts and allowed one earned run over seven innings. Megan Nuechterlein and Ella Esterby both made appearances in the sixth.
Game 2: Ole Miss 10, Kent State 0 (5 innings)
After scoring twice in the bottom of the first, Ole Miss plated eight with two outs in the second inning to lead 10-0.
Kent State's first two runners of the game reached in the top of third, as Julia Mazanec and Alexandria Whitmore delivered back-to-back singles with two outs, but the Rebels got a groundout to prevent them from scoring.
The Golden Flashes collected another pair of two-out singles in the fourth to load the bases but were once again unable to score.
After needing just one pitch to record the final out in the second, Megan Nuechterlein allowed only one hit while preventing Ole Miss from scoring in the third and fourth innings.
