KENT, Ohio — The Kent State women's basketball team posted a 67-59 victory over visiting Buffalo on Saturday at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (18-8, 13-3 MAC) scored the first six points and have not trailed during their three-game winning streak.
All three members of the senior class had productive performances. Katie Shumate recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points and 13 rebounds, which matched her career-high, while adding five assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Mikala Morris scored 12 points and also had two rejections. Abby Ogle made a couple of key baskets early and finished with four points, four rebounds and three steals.
The junior class also made big contributions to the victory. Bridget Dunn totaled 11 points and 12 rebounds, tying a career-high, for her second double-double. Jenna Batsch added 14 points and Eléna Maier scored a career-high six points.
Dunn's three-pointer less than four minutes in put the Flashes ahead 11-4 and prompted timeout to be called by the Bulls. Kent State shot 2-of-8 the rest of the first quarter and had the lead trimmed to two, 15-13.
The Flashes' lead reached double-figures midway through the second period, as Batsch and Shumate combined for three triples as part of a 9-0 run, but Buffalo was fought back to get within 35-30 at halftime.
Kent State locked in defensively during the third quarter and held its guest to only 11 points while doubling the lead to 10 entering the fourth.
A traditional three-point play by Dunn gave the Flashes their largest lead of the day at 61-48 with 6:50 remaining. Buffalo then went on a 6-0 run over the next 90 seconds but failed to make another field goal until less than 30 seconds were left on the clock.
Kent State will conclude the home schedule on Wednesday, March 6 against Ball State. The contest will be nationally televised on ESPNU at 5 p.m.
