KENT-The Golden Flashes split Sunday's double header with Saint Joe's, walking off the Hawks in game one and dropping game two.
GAME ONE: KENT STATE 3 ST JOE'S 2
A true pitcher's dual in game one as the teams combined for a total of four hits in the seven-inning game. Kent State scratched across a run in the third, without the benefit of a hit as a pair of walks, a wild pitch and a sac fly did the trick to give Kent State a 1-0 lead. After the Hawks pushed across an unearned run in the fourth, the Flashes' lone hit of the game came in the fourth as a double into the right field corner by Jake Casey moved Dom Kibler to third. A Connor Ashby sac fly pushed Kibler across to make it 2-1. It stayed that way until the seventh thanks to five strong innings from Calvin Bickerstaff. The right hander scattered three hits and struck out four in his outing.
The Hawks tied things in the seventh, working a bases loaded walk to tie the game at two. The Flashes then answered back in the bottom half, also not needing a hit to score. Bo Shinkle came in as a pinch runner, stole second then went to third on a wild pitch. After a Josh Johnson fly out, Shinkle then scored on the second wild pitch of the inning barely beating the throw home and giving Kent State its second-straight 3-2 win over the Hawks.
GAME TWO: ST. JOE'S 5 KENT STATE 0
The Flashes saw their 21-game home win streak snapped in the nightcap, falling 5-0. The Hawks sent nine men to the plate in the fourth, using a pair of walks, two timely singles and a wild pitch to plate four off starter Joe Miceli. The Flashes would load the bases in the third and again in the fifth, but couldn't push a run across. Kent State would get a could of runners into scoring position, but couldn't find the timely hit as three Hawk pitchers combined on the shutout. Five relievers tossed the final six innings, allowing a run on three hits while striking out four.
The split moves Kent State to 11-12 on the season as they wrap up the non-con weekend portion of the regular season. A four-game road week gets started on Tuesday with a trip down to Columbus to face Ohio State. FIrst pitch against the Buckeyes is set for 6 p.m.
