CLEVELAND – Karlie Franz has been named the Mid-American Conference Co-Specialist of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. She earned the award alongside Western Michigan's Halle Faulkner.
The graduate student competed exclusively on floor in the Golden Flashes' two meets over the weekend. At the All-Ohio Meet at Ohio State, Franz scored a 9.875 to tie for third with fellow Flash Heidi Schultz. In Kent State's home meet against Eastern Michigan, Franz tied for the event title with a 9.900 as the Flashes combined to score 197.200, the second-highest total in program history.
Franz has gone 9.9+ on floor six times this season and is tied for the MAC lead with a 9.910 NQS in the event. Sunday's win also marked her fifth floor title of the season.
This marks the second time this season that a Kent State gymnast has earned weekly awards from the conference after Alyssa Guns also earned Specialist of the Week honors last month.
Kent State is back on the road this weekend, traveling to face Western Michigan on Sunday, March 10, in a battle between two of the Mid-American Conference's highest-ranked teams. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
The Flashes return to the M.A.C. Center on Sunday, March 17 at 1p.m. when they host Bowling Green to wrap up the home portion of the schedule. Kent State Gymnastics will be celebrating Senior Day by honoring this year's senior class and their contributions to the program.
