Kent State Beats BG 6-1 for MAC Series Sweep

KENT, Ohio – Kent State defeated Bowling Green, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Devine Diamond to secure its second series sweep of a Mid-American Conference opponent this season.

The Golden Flashes (23-18, 9-10 MAC) played from behind for the first time during the series after the Falcons hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning.

Senior Emily Lippe provided the go-ahead hit in the bottom of the third with a towering two-run blast over the scoreboard beyond the left field fence.

Kent State extended the lead with two runs in the fourth. A pair of singles and an error placed runners on the corners with one out. An off-target throw to second on a stolen bases by graduate student Alexandria Whitmore allowed sophomore Bri Despines to score from third. Lippe recorded her third RBI of the day later in the inning to make it 4-1.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth for junior Savannah Wing, who brought the final two runs home with a single.

The Flashes had seven players contribute to 11 hits in the game, the most in nearly a month. Sophomore Carley Penner tied her career-high with three hits to lead the way.

Freshman Megan Nuechterlein (16-8) earned her second complete game victory of the series and had three strikeouts.

Kent State will play four road contests this week before concluding the regular season with a five-game homestand. The Flashes will travel to Cleveland State for a single game on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
