Golden Flashes Take Down Vikings, 10-2

CLEVELAND – The Kent State softball team was victorious in the final non-conference game of the season, defeating host Cleveland State 10-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (24-18) totaled 10 hits on the day. Graduate student Alexandria Whitmore led the way with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. She recorded her 100th career hit with a single in the top of the sixth.
Freshman Megan Nuechterlein (17-8) tossed a complete game and had six strikeouts to tie her career-high.
Kent State got the scoring started in the top of the second, as graduate student Julia Mazanec hit a double to right field. After moving to third on a fly ball, Mazanec scored on a bunt single by Whitmore. Sophomore Brynn Libler followed with a double to bring Whitmore across the plate and make it 2-0.
Sophomore Bri Despines started the top of the third with a triple and scored on a groundout by junior Savannah Wing.
Leading 3-1 after five, the Flashes broke it open with five runs in the top of the sixth. Whitmore brought in the first run with a single to right field. Senior Emily Lippe scored on a sac fly by freshman Megan Claerhout and Whitmore came home on a dropped fly ball. Junior Delaney Robeson brought in the final two of the inning with her fifth home run of the season.
Sophomore Carley Penner doubled down the left field line to start the top of the seventh and scored on a wild pitch after moving to third on a groundout. Whitmore later made it 10-1 with a RBI triple.
Kent State will travel to first-place Miami for the final road games of the season on April 26-27.
