KENT, Ohio – A 44-yard field goal off the foot of Andrew Glass as time wound down on the clock gave the Gold Team a 24-23 victory over the Blue Team in Flash Bowl II.
With the team split evenly into the Blue and Gold Teams, the back-and-forth affair that took place Saturday night was expected and gave the raucous crowd inside Dix Stadium quite the show.
The game started with a celebratory coin toss where honorary head coaches Rob Senderoff and Todd Starkey shot for possession on a basketball hoop at half court. After a three-and-out by the Blue Team to start the game, the Gold Team got on the scoreboard first when Tommy Ulatowski found Crishon McCray in the endzone for a five-yard touchdown pass. Neither side would find the endzone again in the first quarter.
The Blue Team would even up the score when JD Sherrod capped off a nine play, 71-yard drive with a six-yard scamper to the endzone. Sherrod found Sebastian Brown twice on the drive, racking up 46 yards through the air.
The Gold Team would answer with a score of their own following an eight play, 81-yard drive. Ky Thomas and Ayden Harris combined for 35 yards on the ground on the drive before Harris punched in it from six yards out. The Gold Team held a 14-7 advantage going into the half, but strong performances from both sides in the #KentGRIT Variety Show made the score Gold Team 21, Blue Team 20.
Both defenses shined in the second half as each allowed just one field goal in the final 30 minutes of play. On the Blue Team, Stephen Daley and Oliver Billotte each racked up a pair of sacks while Matt Harmon added another. Kameron Olds picked off an Ulatowski pass and rumbled from one red zone to the other to set up a score. Naim Muhammed and Terrell Miller each picked off a pass for the Gold Team.
Ulatowski found McCray twice on what would be the final drive of the game - the sophomore racked up 52 yards receiving on the drive. A pair of sacks by Stephen Daley set up a third-and-long when Ulatowski took a shot towards the endzone looking for McCray more. The Blue Team broke up the pass and had seemingly won the game before a late flag gave Andrew Glass the opportunity to win the Gold Team its second Flash Bowl in as many years.
Flash Bowl II wraps up the Golden Flashes' spring season. Kent State will take to the field again this summer in preparation of the 2024 season. The Golden Flashes open up the 2024 campaign at Pitt on Saturday, August 31st and open the home slate against Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday, September 7th.
