AVON- The Golden Flashes dropped the opener of the 2024 Mid-American Conference tourney 5-2 to Miami on Wednesday evening at Crushers Stadium.
The majority of the offense happened early on Wednesday as Josh Johnson came into score the game's first run on a single to left center off the bat of Michael McNamara. In the bottom of the first, Evan Applewick connected on a two-run homer to give Miami a lead they wouldn't relinquish.. The Redhawks added three more in the second, connecting on a pair of run-scoring singles and a third on a wild pitch.
Kent State had their chances, loading the bases in the second with nobody out and couldn't score. All told the Flashes left six in scoring position and 11 overall. The opener also saw a lengthy rain delay in the seventh with teams and fans waiting out an over two-hour delay.
Bickerstaff got the tough loss after going the first three and a third. Jack Kartsonas and Caden Leonard threw nearly five innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit.
The rain delay will push Thursday's game to 10:30 a.m. against Toledo in a win-or-go-home contest.
