KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team returned from a three-game road trip to host Penn State at Murphy-Mellis Field on Friday, falling 4-1 to the Nittany Lions. The highlight of the match for the Flashes was the performance of freshman goalkeeper Lieve Jansen, who totaled 15 saves in the contest.
The first quarter proved to be quiet as the teams played to a 0-0 stalemate after 15 minutes of action. Neither side was able to register a shot on goal in the period as both sides felt out the competition. The Nittany Lions made their offensive presence felt throughout the second quarter, grabbing the opening goal of the game just four minutes in. Jansen's five saves in the second period played a pivotal role in keeping the Flashes in the match.
Kent State was able to build momentum heading into the half, forcing two saves out of the Penn State goalkeeper which kept the match at 1-0 at halftime. The Flashes continued to build momentum in the third quarter, ultimately paying off with an equalizing goal nine minutes into the second half. After a shot from Maia Sarrabayrouse hit the post, Maybritt Duwel worked the ball back around to Emma Rolston, who opened her season-scoring account with a tidy finish. With the help of more defensive heroics from Jansen, including a phenomenal breakaway save, the match entered the fourth quarter tied 1-1.
The Flashes were unable to carry their momentum into the fourth quarter, as Penn State grabbed their second goal of the match less than two minutes into the period to take a 2-1 lead. The Nittany Lions further strengthened their advantage by converting a penalty less than one minute later to improve their lead to 3-1. Penn State put the game away with their third goal of the fourth quarter just minutes later, establishing a 4-1 lead that was untouched until the final horn.
Despite the goals conceded in the fourth period, Jansen continued to impress in the cage by tallying seven fourth-quarter saves, including a phenomenal penalty save just before the end of the match.
The Flashes return to action on Friday as they open MAC play by hosting Ball State at Murphy-Mellis field, with the match set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
