Kent, Ohio- The Kent State soccer team started the home portion of their Mid-American conference slate with a 1-0 shutout of the Ball State Cardinals Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (5-2-1, 2-0 MAC) wrap up the first weekend of conference play with a pair of wins, while the Cardinals (5-4-0, 0-2 MAC) have dropped their last two.
Neither side was able to find a goal in a first half of play dominated in the midfield. Goalkeeper, Heidi Marshall made three big saves to keep a zero on the board. The Flashes were limited in the attack during the first half with just one shot on goal and no corner kick opportunities.
Coming out the halftime break Kent State looked rejuvenated and started to put some quality attacks together. The Flashes would gain the advantage in the 73rd minute when Kelsey Salopek delivered a long cross from the right side that found the head of Alisa Arthur headed it off the bar in the top right corner and in. After the goal the teams would each only get one more shot a piece before the final whistle blew.
The back line of Salopek, Ava Todd, Ali Weibel, and Allison Collins had another strong game shutting down the high-powered Ball State offense to just five shots on goal. Salopek shut down two of the best wingers in the conference, Delaney Caldwell and Addie Chester (Top two-point scorers in the MAC), to no shots on goal. Marshall recorded all 5 saves en route to her second straight shutout and third of the year.
In the box score Ball State led in shots (9-5), shots on goal (5-1), and corner kick opportunities (6-1).
