
Flashes Prep for First Road Test at West Virginia

KENT, Ohio - The Kent State gymnastics team is set for their second meet of the 2025 season as the Flashes hit the road for the first time to take on West Virginia in Morgantown.
ABOUT THE FLASHES
Kent State opened the competitive season last Friday in the MAC Center with a tri-meet against Fisk and Wilberforce. The Flashes tallied an all-around team score of 193.775 to finish first of the three teams competing, ahead of a 189.075 by Fisk and a 141.375 by Wilberforce. A huge spark for Kent State came from senior Alyssa Guns, whose performance on beam and floor earned her a MAC Specialist of the Week honor. Guns claimed first place on beam with a 9.850, the joint-highest score across all events in the competition, and a runner-up finish on the floor by recording a 9.825. Another strong performance for the Flashes came from Nene Alvine, who claimed first place on vault with a 9.825 and runner-up on beam, tallying a 9.800. Kent State will look to replicate the strong performance in the final two rotations of their opening meet across all four events on Thursday. The Flashes earned back-to-back scores of 48.775 in the final two rotations to clinch the season-opening win.
SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA
The Mountaineers opened their season by splitting a pair of road meets at Temple and Central Michigan. West Virginia tallied an all-around team score of 193.6 to defeat Temple's 191.2 before narrowly falling to the Chippewas 193.95-193.75. Senior Anna Leigh earned the Big 12 Co-Specialist of the Week award for her performance on the floor at Central Michigan, where she earned the program's first 9.950 in the event since 2023. Additionally, freshman Sophia Rice was awarded Big 12 Newcomer of the Season after recording a 9.850 on vault at Temple.
SERIES HISTORY
West Virginia leads the all-time series against the Flashes, bolstering a 4-25 record and holding an eight-meet win streak in the series. The Mountaineers narrowly defeated Kent State in the MAC Center last season 194.825-194.050. The Flashes will look to claim their first win over the Mountaineers since 2005 on Thursday.
UP NEXT
The Flashes will have a ten-day break following the West Virginia meet before opening MAC competition on the road against Eastern Michigan on January 26 at 1 p.m. That meet will be followed by Kent State's next home meet, which is set for Sunday, February 2, at 1 p.m. against Western Michigan.
