Kent, Ohio-?? The Kent State and Eastern Michigan soccer teams both turned in historic performances on Thursday night as the two forced a 1-1 draw at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium in conference play.
Despite the score, the Golden Flashes impressively outshot the Eagles by a count of 31-3. That outcome tied the record for fourth-most shots in a game by KSU in program history. On the other side, Eastern Michigan goalkeeper Ella Holland finished with an outstanding performance with 20 saves. That was good for not only a school record, but it tied a 28 year-old Mid-American Conference record that was set by Kent State's own Cherie Brusky in 1997.
After no scoring and 10 shots from the Blue and Gold in the first half, the second half started with intense defense as well. Eastern Michigan broke the tie in the 69th-minute on a free kick as Rosalie Takacsy sent the ball in to Hannah Thompson who capitalized and put the ball in the back of the net.
Kent State scored the equalizer very quickly as Samantha Miller went past the right side of the EMU defense to score less than a minute later in a play that showed a strong sense of urgency from the Flashes. That score would be the last of the contest as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Along with a 28-shot differential in favor of the Blue and Gold, they also led in the corner kick category by a count of 7-0. Junior midfielder Samantha Miller and freshman forward Jules Dolinski finished with 7 and 6 shots respectively while each produced five shots-on-goal respectively. Senior defender Kesley Salopek also finished with five shots on the night. Leah Shaffer finished the game with another pair of saves.
