
Milestone Performances Lift Golden Flashes over Eastern Kentucky

KENT – Kent State Men's Basketball (5-1) won their fifth straight game on Tuesday night defeating the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky University by a final score of 93-78. A pair of Flashes achieved career milestones as Morgan Safford surpassed 1,000 points in his college career. Delrecco Gillespie also surpassed 500 points as a Golden Flash. Rob Whaley Jr. tallied 20 points for his second highest total as a Flash thus far.
Kent State opened the first four and half minutes on an 11-5 run with Jahari Williamson and Delrecco Gillespie getting after the Colonels early. At 15:42 in the first half Morgan drained a corner three to tally his 1,000th career point. He and Rob Whaley Jr. Were quick to double-digits in the opening 20 as Kent State pushed their lead to 53-34 by the half. The Flashes got back to work in the second half extending their lead to 20 points. With 13:36 to play Gillespie lay the ball in for his 500th point as a Golden Flash. Eastern Kentucky began to chip into the large KSU lead with under 10 minutes to play as they began to heat up from three. The Colonels got to within nine points before Kent State pressed firmly back down on the gas pedal. The Blue and Gold finished the game on a 17-10 run with Gillespie and Quinn Woidke stacking the lead back in KSU's favor. In the final minute Coach Senderoff emptied the bench with Deandre Jones making his first appearance in-game for Kent State. Kent State won by a 93-78 final.

Morgan Safford is now up to 1,012 points following his 15-points performance in the win. He is up to nine double-digit games this season. Gillespie tallied his sixth double-double in as many games against EKU with 25 points and 11 rebounds. He continues to lead the nation in overall double-doubles. Rob Whaley Jr. tallied his fourth double-digit game and his second 20 plus point game as a Golden Flash. It marks his second highest point total of the season so far.

Kent State will be back in the MACC on Saturday, Nov. 22 to host Cleveland State University in their second meeting in seven days. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
