Junior Trio Leads Flashes Friday at South Florida Showdown

TAMPA, Fla. – Juniors Kam Utendorf, Brynn Libler, and Maddy Miklesh combined for nine hits and five RBIs as Kent State softball opened weekend action at the South Florida Showdown on Friday morning.

The Golden Flashes (3-8) lost the first game of the day to Louisville, 13-3, and then fell to Michigan, 8-3.

Utendorf had four hits and reached base in all five trips to the plate. Libler totaled three hits and three runs scored. Miklesh drove in three runs on two hits.

Game 1: Louisville 13, Kent State 3 (5 innings)
Three consecutive hits allowed the Golden Flashes to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Brynn Libler got it started with a double down the left field line. Libler then moved to second on a single by Kam Utendorf and scored on Maddy Miklesh's single.

Louisville tied it in the bottom of the second and went ahead with seven runs in the bottom of the third.

Kent State got two runs back in the top of the fourth, as Libler, Utendorf and Miklesh once again provided three consecutive hits.

The Cardinals extended their lead to 10 in the bottom of the fourth, and the Flashes were unable to score in the fifth.

Game 2: Michigan 8, Kent State 3
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Flashes put together three consecutive two-out hits to cut the deficit in half. Kendal Leitner extended the frame with a single and scored on a triple by Brynn Libler. Kam Utendorf followed with a double to make it 4-2.

The Wolverines got one run back in the top of the fifth. In the bottom half of the inning, singles by Carley Penner and Megan Claerhout put runners on the corners with no outs. Penner then scored on a double-steal, but Kent State was unable to add more runs.

Michigan scored its final three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Action at the South Florida Showdown continues Saturday evening against Wisconsin at 6:15 p.m. and host USF at 8:30 p.m.
