
Kent State Drops Doubleheader at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Kent State scored in the first inning during both games of Saturday's softball doubleheader at Central Michigan before falling by scores of 4-3 and 12-4.
Sophomore Megan Claerhout led the Golden Flashes at the plate during the twinbill with four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Redshirt sophomore Kendal Leitner and junior Brynn Libler totaled three hits each, as Libler extended her season-best hitting streak to seven games.
Game 1: Central Michigan 4, Kent State 3
After the first two batters of the game were retired, Savannah Wing, Kendal Leitner and Megan Claerhout put together three straight hits to take a 1-0 lead.
Carley Penner got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Chippewas scoreless in the bottom of the first, but the host scored three in the second inning. Penner held Central Michigan scoreless over the next two innings and it remained 3-1 after five.
A leadoff walk drawn by Leitner and double by Claerhout put two in scoring position to start the top of the sixth. Pinch runner Brooke Aberle scored on a wild pitch, and Penner brought in the tying run with a sac fly.
The Chippewas went back ahead with two doubles in the bottom of the sixth.
Kent State threatened in the top of the seventh, as Wing battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a two-out walk. Leitner then collected her third hit of the game to advance Wing into scoring position, but CMU was able to get out of the inning to end the game.
Game 2: Central Michigan 12, Kent State 4 (5 innings)
Back-to-back singles by Brynn Libler and Savannah Wing, and a successful double-stea,l put two runners in the scoring position with one out in the top of the first. Libler then scored on a sac fly to center by Kendal Leitner.
Central Michigan took the lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer.
Kent State went back ahead with two runs in the top of the second. Megan Claerhout and Carley Penner started the frame with singles and later scored on an error.
Libler scored again in the top of the third to make it 4-2. After a leadoff single, she moved to third on back-to-back groundouts and then scored on Claerhout's single back up the middle.
The Chippewas exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-4 lead and added two more in the fourth.
On Deck for the Flashes
Kent State returns to Devine Diamond for a doubleheader against Buffalo on Tuesday, April 15. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
